Forgot to post this the other day. One of of my tracks was featured on a mix by Last Year’s Girl aka Lis (who reviewed the 13th Note gig on my recent tour with Dave Hughes and Adam Bennett). She also had some lovely kind words to say about me too.
5. Jenny Owen Youngs: “Fuck Was I”
This came about through Adam Boucher’s lovely live rendition of a song which staggeringly summed up much of this month for me. It sounds like biting your lip and singing with your gut, and Jenny in the accompanying video is – although censored – pretty much adorable
15. Adam Boucher: “Exceptions”
It’s ACOUSTIC and a BOY with GREAT LYRICS, and of course I’m going to fall in love with him.
Head over to the blog to read the rest of the post and to download the mix. It has loads of other great artists on it including Dan Bern and Frank Turner. Great to see that my cover of the Jenny Owen Youngs song led to someone checking out the original. Jenny Owen Youngs is an incredibly amazing songwriter and it’s nice to see my far rougher punk rendition didn’t just send people running screaming out the venue in horror!.

Another review I forgot to post… This time courtesy of ‘Tracks Monkeys With Lasers’ who joined Oxygen Thief and Ben Marwood for a few dates on their tour, which were also the first two shows of tour for myself and Adam Bennett.
So firstly, Addistock in Birmingham:
Next up, it was Mr Adam Boucher who’s now back as a solo act after the Dead Set disbanded (who have also played one of my shows). This was the first time I’d seen him solo and I enjoyed the set and the difference in sound that the solo has from the full band set. With plenty of songs under his belt, there was a good variety of his own tracks, and the odd cover, with A Farewell To Harrington (and the heart wrenching back story to the song) being the backstory.
and then the Wilimgton Arms gig:
Next up, it was time for Adam Boucher whose set was similar to the night before. His somewhat abrasive banter with the crowd may not have gone down brilliantly with a quiet, Sunday night crowd but he seemingly won some of them over as he got them to keep clapping after breaking a string and changing his guitar before carrying on. It was a slightly strange set though as he actually said nice things about Adam Bennett between tracks, perhaps only to lure him into a false sense of security before abusing him for the rest of their tour again.

I forgot to post this gig review from the 13th Note gig of the tour. So here it is. Thanks to Lis for the great review…
Tonight’s other Adam is Bournemouth’s Adam Boucher, who sounds a bit like Billy Bragg singing songs about girls and playing to empty rooms. He does this gorgeous cover of gorgeous Jenny Owen Youngs’ gorgeous “Fuck Was I” and it works just as well, whoever the bitter one is.

Big thanks to Tracks Monkeys with Lasers for this lovely review of our recent Betsey Trotwood gig:
Next up was a band I’ve been meaning to catch for a while and one that the main acts wanted put on in Adam Boucher & The Dead Set.
Adam started out as a solo artist, playing a folky sound but has since joined up with Jon on bass and Steve on drums to create his punk ‘shouty folk’ sound. This might sound a bit odd but it worked really well.
With just 30 minutes on stage, the guys made full use of their time, managing to launch through a whole host of tracks. Some have been reworked from Adam’s solo stuff, while others have been written specifically for the band. Either way, they sounded really good. Tracks like “Argh, I’m A Numpty!”, “Growing Up & Getting Out” etc all sounding really good in the confines of the Betsey.
Short, frantic songs with the shouty folk vocals; the set ripped along nicely with little time to catch your breath between songs (but a spot of intra-band piss taking from Adam and Jon often the only thing to split up the set). I’m pretty confident in saying that they went down well on the night as pretty much all of the free CDs they bought along had gone by the end of their set.
Reading the last paragrah, people who witnessed any of our shows on our tour in March will wonder if they’re reviewing a different band! We made a definite point to just knuckle down, play the songs and keep the banter down to a minimum. Seemed to work a treat. As much as I love interaction and between song banter, we’ve definitely stretched the limits of acceptability at times. I say ‘we’, I mostly mean ‘I’!
You can read the whole review (including audio from the awesome Oxygen Thief & Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun) at the link below. It was a really fucking good night. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the blog too.
